Our professional guides are experienced, patient, and charismatic – your entire family will be treated like royalty!

A Springtime Alaska Fishing Trip

There’s arguably no better fishing season than mid-to-late spring when the first king salmon run arrives in the turquoise Kenai River. We’re obviously very busy during the first king salmon run, but we always maintain a strict angler-to-guide ratio for everyone’s enjoyment. The Kenai River is the perfect place for your children to learn the tricks of the trade and to catch that first behemoth! There’s never an off-season for halibut fishing here at our riverfront Alaska fishing lodge. Most of our halibut fishing excursions depart from nearby Homer, a quintessential Kenai Peninsula harbor town known as the “halibut capital of the world.” Catch bucket-list “barn-doors,” delicious rockfish, or saltwater king salmon during your memorable fishing charter.

Premier Alaska Fishing Packages

Browse through our fully-customizable fishing and adventure packages before giving us a call – there’s something for everyone here at Soldotna B&B Lodge. While we highly encourage families to stick together during your stay here in Soldotna, we understand that bear viewing, whale watching, and glacier viewing excursions are hard to pass up. ALASKA DOG SLED TOURS AT SOLDOTNA B&B

A little snow never hurt anyone. Just because winter is peeking its head around the corner, doesn’t mean we’re not thoroughly enjoying the beautiful Last Frontier. While we’re no longer accepting Alaska fishing trips this season, we’re gearing up for highly-anticipated wintertime dog sledding at Seavey’s. Soldotna B&B Lodge provides the best Alaska dog sled tours within 500 miles. These tours trek deep into the vast Alaskan wilderness with the help of the friendliest, toughest, and most gifted sled dogs on the Kenai Peninsula. Authentic Alaska Dog Sled Tours

If you’re hoping to strap into an authentic dog sled pulled by a pack of strong, smiling canines high atop a stunningly beautiful glacier near Seward, Alaska, you’re in luck! Alaska dog sled tours are available during the summer months on most days, depending on the weather. Not many Alaska fishing lodges provide adventure packages that include dog sledding. The friendly staff here at the Soldotna B&B Lodge always recommend this authentic tour in combination with fishing, whale watching, glacier viewing, and so much more! You’ll start the journey with a breathtaking 10-minute flight to a nearby dog camp at Godwin Glacier. On your trip, you’ll get to witness nearly every crevice of the glacier. Godwin Glacier always has some of the freshest powder in the region. Every rider will have the chance to cuddle with the lovable pups before returning to the lodge.

UTV Dog Sledding in Alaska

While not “authentic,” the 2.5-hour UTV dog sled tour is a terrific alternative for those hoping to meander through the vast Alaskan wilderness, learn about the Iditarod, and meet a family of adorable sled dogs. Your Polaris Ranger UTV will be pulled by sled dogs (with the help of a little gas). During the scenic journey, you’ll learn about the life of a dog sled champion from the Iditarod-winning Seavey family. You’ll be amazed at how much preparation goes into winning the world’s “last great race.” The sled tour ends with pictures, entertainment, and stories at the sizable Seavey racing kennel.

KENAI FJORDS AND BIRDING TOURS AT SOLDOTNA B&B

No single vacation in Soldotna, Alaska, is the same thanks to the seemingly endless activities offered at Soldotna B&B Lodge. Yes, our lodge guides eager anglers from May through October in search of salmon, trout, and halibut, but we also customize week-long vacation packages to include glacier tours, birdwatching, canoeing, whale watching, and bear viewing. Our peaceful, affordable, and cozy lodge rests on the edge of the famous Kenai River, so you’re never more than a few steps from a fishing adventure! But you’re also a scenic drive away from the awe-inspiring Kenai Fjords National Park or an ever-popular, day-long birding tour. We’re proud to be one of the only Alaska fishing lodges to offer such superb wilderness adventures.

Kenai Fjords National Park

The six-hour Kenai Fjords National Park tour is all about wildlife, glaciers, and the breathtaking coastal scenery of the Kenai Peninsula. This cruise is Alaska’s most popular glacier and wildlife cruise, which departs from Seward. This beautiful port city has an abundance of sea otters, bald eagles, mountain goats, and sea lions. On the journey into Kenai Fjords, you’ll likely spot puffins, Dall porpoises, and orca, humpback, or gray whales. The cruise passes some of the most famous tidewater and alpine glaciers in the world where you’ll be able to hear the loud cracks of the calving icebergs. On the return journey, lucky cruise ships will cross paths with the second largest mammal on the planet: the rare fin whale. Resurrection Bay remains one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world thanks to its picturesque rock islands and sea-stacks.

Birding Tours

Birding (or birdwatching) is still a relatively new recreational activity. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that citizens began to appreciate the beauty of rare birds, rather than their flavor. There is no better place on Earth to birdwatch that the Last Frontier. As cameras became lighter and more advanced, birdwatching grew into a popular activity around the turn of the 21st century. The activity’s popularity hasn’t stopped growing in this golden age of technology. Alaskans have been observing birds in the wilderness since we can remember. They’re a part of our everyday lifestyle, and the Soldotna B&B Lodge is no different. We offer two unique birding packages: the three-night Birders’ Brief One and the five-night Birder’s Bounty. Both packages include trips to Kenai Fjords National Park and a drift-boat trip down the Kenai River. Some of the birds we encounter daily are warblers, mergansers, loons, swans, terns, ptarmigans, and various shorebirds.

Alaska Fishing Lodges

Soldotna B&B Lodge not only provides once-in-a-lifetime fishing, wildlife, and birding adventures, but we also have immaculate guest rooms on the edge of the Kenai River. Crescent Lake – Lake Clark National Park

Crescent Lake never gets old, no matter how many times we visit this natural paradise. This beautiful lake is not to be confused with the stunningly clear Crescent Lake in the Kenai Mountains near Cooper Landing. Depending on the season, you’ll have the opportunity to throw a line in for sockeye salmon, silver salmon, Dolly Varden, and lake trout. The flight from Soldotna crosses Cook Inlet to Lake Clark National Park, taking approximately 45 minutes in total. You’ll land smoothly on the turquoise Crescent Lake in the heart of the Chigmit Mountains. You’ll get a birds-eye view of the 10,000 foot tall Mount Redoubt on the fly-out. A professional fishing guide will greet you upon arrival. Brown bears often feed in the shallow waters on the perimeter of the lake, creating the ideal photo opportunity.

Wolverine Creek

If your goal is to get up-close-and-personal with a majestic brown bear, then Wolverine Creek is the ideal fly-out fishing adventure for you! The water is so clear on this secluded creek that you can see large schools of sockeye and silver salmon. This fly-out trip is quite crowded in the summer months but excessively beautiful in the fall. The 30-minute flight crosses Cook Inlet into the Big River Lakes region. Brown bears, and occasionally black bears, feed in the creek during spawning seasons. Wolverine Creek remains one of more distinctive Alaska fishing trips available.

FISH TO CATCH THIS FALL ON THE KENAI RIVER

Fall’s peak is nearly here on the Kenai River in southcentral Alaska. Over the next handful of weeks, the river bend will transform from forest green to a meld of crimson, marigold, and amber. Soldotna Bed & Breakfast Lodge, home to premier Alaska fishing charters, is steps away from the rushing Kenai River, which is teeming with delicious salmon and beautiful trout. Eager anglers from all across the globe travel each year to the Kenai Peninsula for genuinely once-in-a-lifetime fishing expeditions. Soldotna is equally a world-class fishing lodge and a charming, riverside bed and breakfast. Start a brand new yearly fishing tradition by journeying to the salmon fishing capital of the world!

Silver Salmon

Get ready for the fight of your fishing life, because Alaskan silver salmon are large, feisty, and clever. When you choose the Soldotna Bed & Breakfast Lodge, you’re only steps from one of our Alaska fishing charters. The silver season lasts from mid-August through October. Silvers are widely known to locals as “the fall prince of salmon” because unlike kings, pinks, and sockeyes, they return to the Kenai and Kasilof River in the late summer to spawn.

Rainbow Trout

The Kenai River has some of the best rainbow trout fly fishing in the world. Locals call trophy rainbows “footballs” because of their unique shape. These beautiful critters usually weigh in around four pounds, but our guests have hooked 20-pounders. We also occasionally reel in 10-plus pound rainbows from our 300-foot private river frontage.

Steelhead

One of the unsurpassed Alaska fishing charters on the Kenai Peninsula is our fall steelhead tour on the nearby Kasilof River. Hop aboard a guided drift boat charter for an afternoon of native steelhead fishing. The steelheads in this region are entirely native to Alaska, which is extremely rare. This glacial-fed river is a bait-and-lure fishery because it’s quite silty.

Halibut

Halibut season seemingly never ends on the Kenai Peninsula. Our lucky guests reel in these 50-pound behemoths from opener through the end of the September near the quaint village of Homer, the “halibut fishing capital of the world.” While unlikely, some “barn door” halibut weigh hundreds of pounds, but the smaller 20 pounders are much tastier!

Alaska Fishing Charters

Anglers from all across the globe stay at the Soldotna Bed & Breakfast Lodge. They visit for the world-class fishing, but they fall in love with our charming river view guest rooms, hearty breakfasts, and scenic natural beauty. No other Alaska fishing charters in the Kenai and Soldotna area can match our caring service, experienced guides, and year-round activities!

MUSHROOM AND BERRY PICKING IN SOLDOTNA

Soldotna B&B in Soldotna, Alaska, offers more than just fishing, and you can also go mushroom and berry picking. You’ll find a variety of wild berries and mushrooms throughout the late summer season and well into the fall! You’ll enjoy searching the forests of Soldotna Alaska.

Berries

Soldotna Alaska is a terrific place to search and gather wild berries! Blueberries, raspberries, currants, salmonberries, and huckleberries, are great for eating right off the bush or making preserves! After harvesting your share of berries, you can eat them on your way back to Soldotna B&B, or save them for baking or preserves. If you are planning on freezing them, we’ll share our secret: Single layer the berries on a cookie sheet and freeze them. Then place them in a container and back into the freezer, this will make them easier to remove from the container. Please note that berries are an essential food source for a variety of animals in our area. There’s a chance you’ll encounter these animals while you’re berry picking, so please stay alert to your surroundings! If you see animals, we ask you to be respectful, while staying safe. If possible, we urge you to leave quietly and find a different berry patch. If needed, we do understand you may have to defend yourself with pepper spray or a shotgun.

Mushrooms

In Soldotna Alaska, the thrill of big game hunting runs deep in any Alaskan blood! However, today we’re focusing on a different prey: mushrooms! Near Soldotna B&B, you’ll find boletes, morels and gilled mushrooms, and many more. Mushroom hunting can be a dangerous business; some mushrooms are lethal to humans! One of the challenges with identifying mushrooms is that their appearance changes dramatically as they age. When it first comes out of the ground, a baby mushroom looks like one you may buy at the store! At this stage, it’s easy to confuse an edible species with a poisonous one. The number of mushroom species doesn’t help you identify them either. There are thousands of mushroom species in Alaska alone. Unfortunately, many are inedible, but we do have some mushroom hunters and the season is approaching! So, whether you find mushrooms or it’s just a reason to spend more time outside, join us in Soldotna Alaska!

Where’s the Fish?

Kenai River fishing is known worldwide for its abundance of fish and the enormous sizes they can grow. Though fish in the Kasilof River is somewhat smaller, they are still very abundant. It is an all-around quieter experience, as there are fewer people so you can fish peacefully. The Kenai and Kasilof Rivers have four out of the five species of Pacific Salmon that return to spawn each season in Alaska, as well as rainbow trout, Dolly-Varden, and Steelhead. Peak times for Rainbows and Dollies are the last two weeks of June and mid-August through October. The Kenai and Kasilof River both offer Alaskan trophy catches for you to bring home.

The Lower Kenai

The lower Kenai River can get quite busy during peak season, and power boats are allowed on that section of the river. If you would rather avoid the commotion, you can always fish along the beautiful Kasilof River. When you go trophy rainbow trout and, or Salmon fishing, you will also be able to take part in a wildlife tour in the middle of the Kenai River.
