SUMMERTIME SALTWATER ALASKA FISHING ADVENTURES

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The much-anticipated fishing season is finally upon us here at Soldotna B&B Lodge as we’re beginning to welcome groups of anglers from far and wide to our heavenly slice of the Kenai Peninsula. Most visiting anglers who visit Soldotna, Alaska, have been dreaming about catching a trophy king salmon since they were young, but one of the most overlooked fishing locales in our region is the crisp Pacific Ocean waters near Homer, Alaska. [/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” position=”center” up=”2″ down=”0″][blockquote text=”Guests can hop aboard sturdy, state-of-the-art vessels in search of “barn-door” halibut, saltwater kings, rockfish, and many more delicious species. Summertime Alaska fishing adventures near Homer are incredibly tough to beat if you’re hoping to combine natural beauty, wildlife viewing, and, of course, unforgettable battles with the creatures from the deep blue.” show_quote_icon=”yes”][vc_separator type=”transparent” position=”center” up=”3″ down=”0″][vc_column_text] Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect this summer during your well-deserved, annual Alaska fishing vacation to Soldotna B&B Lodge!
Saltwater Salmon
Many Alaska fishing adventures are geared toward king salmon because of their sheer size. Successfully baiting, hooking, and reeling in a monster king is a feeling unlike any other – it’s a moment that’s often mounted on a wall or framed on a mantle. You don’t have to venture onto the Kenai or Kasilof rivers to battle a king, silver, or pink salmon as they’re teeming inside the sapphire blue waters surrounding Homer. We typically troll for salmon during these oceanic excursions, but we occasionally jig in our favorite honey holes.
“Barn-Door” Halibut
Homer remains “The Halibut Fishing Capital of the World” as thousands of anglers trek to this faraway land to catch some of the largest flatfish in the world. While halibut weighing in over 200 pounds have been documented, we set our sights on those who weigh between 20 and 50 pounds. The halibut in this weight class are not only swarming inside Cook Inlet, but they’re the tastiest of the bunch. Bottom fishing is the method of choice in Cook Inlet, and we’ll be using baited hooks to lure these crafty flatfish.
Rockfish and Black Bass and Lingcod, Oh My!
The ugliest fish in Cook Inlet near Homer are – without a doubt – the tastiest species in the sea. Rockfish can be quite beautiful when they’re small and bright orange, but the whoppers that are teeming in our waters frequently vary in size, color, and shape. You won’t find better table fare than a rockfish hooked inside Cook Inlet. Lingcod, meanwhile, are terrifying to most as their sharp teeth and unique scale patterns make them look like real-life monsters. While black bass are certainly not overly ugly, they’re quite large in comparison to most bass species found across North America.

Summer Catches: Fish of the Kenai River
Depending on when you arrive on the Kenai Peninsula, our guides will target three salmon species (king, sockeye, and silver) as well as trophy rainbow trout. First and foremost, most anglers who arrive between early May through July have massive king salmon on their minds. We especially recommend visiting us from mid-June through late July as you’ll get to battle kings, sockeyes, and rainbows! After you’ve reached your limits on salmon, you’ll have an opportunity to spend some time fly fishing for rainbow trout along the Kenai River’s shallow banks. Once the king season ends on the last day of July, the much-anticipated silver season begins. Silver salmon are known as the best pound-for-pound fighters in the salmonoid family – they put on quite an acrobatic show after they’ve taken the bait!
  • King salmon: May 1 – July 31
  • Sockeye salmon: June 10 – August 15
  • Silver salmon: August 1 – October 31
  • Pink salmon: August (on even years)
  • Rainbow trout: June 12 – October 31

KENAI FJORDS AND BIRDING TOURS AT SOLDOTNA B&B

No single vacation in Soldotna, Alaska, is the same thanks to the seemingly endless activities offered at Soldotna B&B Lodge. Yes, our lodge guides eager anglers from May through October in search of salmon, trout, and halibut, but we also customize week-long vacation packages to include glacier tours, birdwatching, canoeing, whale watching, and bear viewing. Our peaceful, affordable, and cozy lodge rests on the edge of the famous Kenai River, so you’re never more than a few steps from a fishing adventure! But you’re also a scenic drive away from the awe-inspiring Kenai Fjords National Park or an ever-popular, day-long birding tour. We’re proud to be one of the only Alaska fishing lodges to offer such superb wilderness adventures.

Kenai Fjords National Park

The six-hour Kenai Fjords National Park tour is all about wildlife, glaciers, and the breathtaking coastal scenery of the Kenai Peninsula. This cruise is Alaska’s most popular glacier and wildlife cruise, which departs from Seward. This beautiful port city has an abundance of sea otters, bald eagles, mountain goats, and sea lions. On the journey into Kenai Fjords, you’ll likely spot puffins, Dall porpoises, and orca, humpback, or gray whales. The cruise passes some of the most famous tidewater and alpine glaciers in the world where you’ll be able to hear the loud cracks of the calving icebergs. On the return journey, lucky cruise ships will cross paths with the second largest mammal on the planet: the rare fin whale. Resurrection Bay remains one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world thanks to its picturesque rock islands and sea-stacks.

Birding Tours

Birding (or birdwatching) is still a relatively new recreational activity. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that citizens began to appreciate the beauty of rare birds, rather than their flavor. There is no better place on Earth to birdwatch that the Last Frontier. As cameras became lighter and more advanced, birdwatching grew into a popular activity around the turn of the 21st century. The activity’s popularity hasn’t stopped growing in this golden age of technology. Alaskans have been observing birds in the wilderness since we can remember. They’re a part of our everyday lifestyle, and the Soldotna B&B Lodge is no different. We offer two unique birding packages: the three-night Birders’ Brief One and the five-night Birder’s Bounty. Both packages include trips to Kenai Fjords National Park and a drift-boat trip down the Kenai River. Some of the birds we encounter daily are warblers, mergansers, loons, swans, terns, ptarmigans, and various shorebirds.

Alaska Fishing Lodges

Soldotna B&B Lodge not only provides once-in-a-lifetime fishing, wildlife, and birding adventures, but we also have immaculate guest rooms on the edge of the Kenai River. Relax with a new book or a cup of Joe on your private deck before heading out to catch a trophy king salmon or beautiful rainbow trout. We serve hot breakfast daily, unlike many Alaska fishing lodges, in our river-view sunroom! Dial 1-877-262-4779 or visit us to learn more about our all-inclusive rates and packages!

RIVER, SEA, AND AIR!

When you stay with us at Soldotna B&B and Lodge, one of the most beautiful Kenai River fishing lodges. We offer an assortment of rates and packages. As spring turns into summer, we would like to feature our river, sea and air package.

What Is Included in This Package?

It’s a six-nights-stay that includes breakfast every morning and lunches for every activities day. Your schedule will be filled with hours of fishing! You will experience eight to eleven hour-days of fishing. An experienced guide will accompany you, and you will have a tackle, bait, and gear for charters. When you come back on-site, you will have access to all cleaning, commercial vacuum packing and freezing of your catch. Each guest also receives two fish shipping boxes and complimentary use of rain gear and hip boots for charters if needed.

Where’s the Fish?

Kenai River fishing is known worldwide for its abundance of fish and the enormous sizes they can grow. Though fish in the Kasilof River is somewhat smaller, they are still very abundant. It is an all-around quieter experience, as there are fewer people so you can fish peacefully. The Kenai and Kasilof Rivers have four out of the five species of Pacific Salmon that return to spawn each season in Alaska, as well as rainbow trout, Dolly-Varden, and Steelhead. Peak times for Rainbows and Dollies are the last two weeks of June and mid-August through October. The Kenai and Kasilof River both offer Alaskan trophy catches for you to bring home.

The Lower Kenai

The lower Kenai River can get quite busy during peak season, and power boats are allowed on that section of the river. If you would rather avoid the commotion, you can always fish along the beautiful Kasilof River. When you go trophy rainbow trout and, or Salmon fishing, you will also be able to take part in a wildlife tour in the middle of the Kenai River. Experience Halibut and Salmon fishing out of our Homer! We also offer a float plane fly-out for fishing and, or bear watching including a spectacular picturesque glacier fly-over. Why wouldn’t you stay with us at Soldotna’s, for a once-in-a-life stay in one of the best Kenai River fishing lodges!

GET READY FOR THE BEST SEASON OF ALL

As your boat rocks you back and forth, you cast a line that you had meticulously baited only moments before into the water. You look around to take in the sprawling Alaskan wilderness that surrounds you until you feel the tug that begins your battle. As you reel and pull, finessing the monster below, you bring in that prized catch. This is our season, and our Soldotna fishing charters are ready to take you out to experience it all.

Ready, Set, Fish!

As the best part of the year comes into swing, Soldotna Bed and Breakfast Lodge is ready to get out on the water for some of the best fishing! Though fish are around all year, we are heading into the peak for some of the most sought-after fish in the Kenai. King Salmon are found all year in saltwater, but in May they head to the fresh waters to spawn, helping grow the numbers and sizes in our freshwater catches. June and July offer the largest abundance of salmon in a larger size, and we can not wait to bring you out for it all.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL SPRING BREAK

Spring break season is in full swing once March rolls around. Many will be packing swimwear and heading down to tropical sunny spots and beaches consumed by crowds. Rather than pushing your way through the shoulder to shoulder crowds and baking in the sun, take your trip north to Alaska. Our Soldotna fishing charters are at the ready to give you an exceptional spring break experience.

Change It Up

Not everyone is about the large crowds, loud music, and partying all week. Sometimes the best getaways are a calm day out on the water. Surround yourself with the Alaskan wilderness and cast a line. Reel in some incredible catches while enjoying the lapping water under your boat. Unlike the beaches in places like Florida and Cancun, you will have plenty of elbow room and not need to worry about rowdy college kids scaring all the fish away.

Better Than Palms

Though palm trees and ocean breezes are what most think of when they bring up spring break, the panoramas in Alaska are nothing short of breathtaking. Find yourself surrounded by beautiful mountain views, incredible bodies of water, and local wildlife that will leave you in awe. From towering moose to all of the incredible varieties of fish you have the change to pull in. There is an endless beauty when you head out on our Soldotna fishing charters.

An Unforgettable Experience

By spending your spring break in Alaska with Soldotna Bed and Breakfast Lodge, you will be stepping out of the status quo and into something extra special. This will be a trip you will never forget. COUPLES THAT FISH TOGETHER, STAY TOGETHER

In current times, there are a lot of things in life going on to the point it seems impossible to spend quality time with the one you love. Everyone has work, school, kids programs, book club, and everything in between. Surprise your love with something that will be sure to bring you closer again. Soldotna Bed and Breakfast Lodge invites you to their fishing lodge Alaska for an unforgettable trip out with your better half.

Spending time together is an essential factor in any relationship. A fun fishing trip out on the Alaskan waters is a perfect way to spend some time away from the hectic happenings of life at home. Grab your fishing gear, take your honey by the hand, and head out to Soldotna for an epic adventure together. Cast some lines and enjoy an Alaskan fishing excursion together.

A Little Friendly Competition

Sometimes a little competition with your better half keeps things interesting. With participating in a sport like fishing, you can place your “bets” and see who can reel in the best catch. There are multiple kinds of fish you could pull up from the waves. Make a fun scavenger hunt with things like each fish, different Alaskan wildlife, the heaviest catch, and other fun ideas on a list. See who can cross the most off and who ends up with the best catch.

Make Memories

When the two of you are out and exploring with your guide, snap some fun pictures of your excursion. Once you return home, you can then take those photos and add them into a memory book. Then you can take it out and look back on all the fun you had at our fishing lodge Alaska. You can even leave room to add more adventures to your book and begin a new tradition!

Visit Soldotna Bed and Breakfast Lodge for an incredible fishing trip for two. After all, couples who fish together, stay together. That is our theory anyway! Give us a call and let us help you set up an unforgettable outing for you and your love.

PLANNING YOUR ALASKA FISHING ADVENTURE

An Alaska fishing vacation can be an epic adventure, but if you are not prepared, it could end in disaster. Alaska’s wilderness is always changing and can be very challenging terrain. Nobody wants to be in the Alaskan wilderness without the essentials and end up uncomfortable or in a potentially dangerous situation. Here are tips to help you have the best experience possible and keep you a happy angler on your visit to an Alaska fishing lodge.

Getting a Guide

When visiting Alaska, the vast landscapes and breathtaking views are an incredible sight, but don’t let it fool you. Alaska’s wilderness is an unpredictable place. This is why guides are essential for a successful trip. At Soldotna Bed and Breakfast Lodge, experienced guides are ready to take you out and get you to the best spots for an outstanding adventure. It is better to be out in the elements with someone who lives in them daily. They are trained and seasoned to the unpredictability of Alaska, so they know how to help you with all you need. Guides can also help you find the spots with prime fishing and give you tips on the most effective techniques to catch the local fish.

Gear Must-Haves

Having the gear you need can be crucial. You will always need the essentials and maybe a few spare sets of socks, but here is an Alaska fishing gear list with some important things to put in your suitcase.

  • Waterproof bags for laundry and anything you don’t want wet.
  • Polarized sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Warm clothing (layers will be your best friend).
  • Rain gear and waterproof outerwear.
  • High-quality chest waders.
  • Fishing vest (optional).
  • Fingerless gloves and warm hat.
  • Properly-fitted waterproof boots.

These are essentials that should be packed along with typical items for trips, such as your regular hygienic products, lounge clothing, and so forth.

Don’t Leave These Behind

Items that you do not want to leave behind are your ticket, fishing license, and wallet with both cash and your cards. All of these items should be the first things packed in waterproof bags that you keep on you as to not lose it. In Alaska, fishing licenses are required for sports fishing, and you will need to purchase a King Salmon stamp to be eligible to fish for King Salmon. Both of these are available at the lodge.

If you have all of these items and you are ready to head out for some fantastic fishing. Soldotna Bed And Breakfast Lodge is a great place to find professional guides and spectacular lodging. You will be transported to the best fishing in Alaska for those monster catches you have been waiting for. So get your checklist ready and start packing, because your Alaska fishing lodge and epic fishing vacation is waiting for you.
